River Safety

What you need to know to stay safe and have fun

  • Rules of the River

All tubing participants must abide by the following State of Massachusetts rules and regulations for 2024:

You cannot rent a tube for children under age 10.

Children ages 10-15 must be accompanied by an adult (18 or older).

No double tubes or tubes tied together.

Everyone needs to wear a Personal Floatation Device (PFD).

No alcohol or marijuana. The river is a “dry zone.”

No glass is allowed. Broken glass can be painful on bare feet.

*The river is patrolled for your safety.

  • Our Safety Policies

All river activities have potential dangers. Our goal is for you and your family to stay safe and enjoy a perfect day of tubing on the beautiful Deerfield River.

Never go in or near the water until you understand and accept the risks associated with tubing on the river.

We provide a safety briefing and require that you sign our waiver form stating that you understand the risks.

The Great Outdoors does not provide tube rentals or shuttle service to children under the age of 10.

Everyone must wear a life jacket (PFD).

Do not tie your tubes together. It is no longer allowed under state regulations. It can make it difficult to maneuver if something is in the way, such as a stump or rock. The ropes also tend to snag on any limbs or debris.

  • Important Safety Tips

Wear a bath suit or moisture lightweight wicking clothing. Do not wear long pants or heavy clothing.

Don’t enter the river under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

If you need to leave the river, always exit to the left because that's that side the road is on.

Beware of foot entrapment! If you fall out of your tube DO NOT stand up in the river. Your foot may become jammed in the rocks and the current may force you down into the water. Simply float on your back with feet facing downriver and paddle to the river bank.

Life Vests Save Lives! Vests are required. If you do not know how to swim or are afraid, do not enter the river. There are rapids or strong currents, class 1 and 2 rapids.

Please wear the life vest provided for free with a tube rental.
